the wonderous world of the music underground [part one]

in the months since i've last written, i've extensively contributed my efforts into joe's musical journey, namely--the recording of his second upcoming album.  the experience has been phenomenal to say the least.  being a witness to something that, frankly, could very well be a true breakthrough to watch in the future for.  being a part of the arranging, media design is a thrill for me, being that this, in my opinion, is a radio-ready project.
the added bonus comes along in the fact that joe is now playing in two bands, ironically--playing two different instruments.  the first, he plays drums and percussion for is the beautifully delicate may stands still.

based from the san diego area, the group is an acoustic alternative band for lack of a better description.  vocalist and guitarist emily herndon sings with a very open, almost vulnerable--hauntingly heartfelt tone.  soloist and backing vocalist asha sukumar provides sophisticated hooks and solos on violin, piano, and mandolin--all the while supporting herndon with lush harmonies.  bassist wesley cole switzer skillfully drives the rhythm section and allows the girls to really shine. he plays with a warm and sweetly humble tone. as a whole, the music flows very well, in an almost ambient/chill kind of way.  i felt the lyrics are introspective while the melodies elude to some kind of yearning for something unattainable.

cathy and i saw them perform in l.a. for their cd release party.  we truly enjoyed our night out. i had purposely restrained myself from hearing anything from the group, so that my experience would not be watered down with expectations and already conceived notions.

the verdict:  i was absolutely floored.  the set they put together invoked deep emotions, both joyous and melancholy.  i had almost forgotten how beautiful music can be. with that i say PLEASE PLEASE check out may stands still.  they are available on iTunes and other fine digital distributors, and if you want a physical cd, you can always contact them via myspace at www.myspace.com/maystandsstill.

absolutely awesome friday!

friday, cathy and some close friends went to breakfast so that left me and my buddy kevin free to roam about and frolick through the whimsical dale know as fallbrook. wait...mebbe i should rephrase that. kevin and i, along with our young cohort daniel, went out to fallbrook for a big time burger. normally, driving at least 50 minutes for a burger would be insane (not counting white castle or my personal slider joint favorite, krystal burgers). with that said, the ride was really good. great weather, cool tunes and three guys hanging out on a very rare not-so-ordinary friday.
(daniel was actually mostly engrossed into his PSP, but he was available when it counted, for the record.)

first a little back story. kevin and i are, for lack of a better term, food buddies. it's strictly platonic, i assure you. any time either of us try something new, we will call each other and either rant or rave about it, depending on the outcome. kevin works as an installer for an iron company and has the privilege of working all over riverside and san diego counties. and, when the opportunity arises that he is near the 15 fwy in san diego county, he will always in fallbrook at a little joint called nessie burgers.

when we arrived at nessie burgers, we were only three people behind the front of the line.  this meant that the burger gods had shown great favor toward us, allowing us to forgo the massive line that is always there from opening to closing time.
while on the pricey side of the scale ($5.50 for just the burger), it is well worth it.  if go too much into detail--i'm going to have to buy one for myself! (thanks kevin--you are awesome!)

GO POUND ONE DOWN, I DARE YA!

moonlighting as a behind-the-scenes rock roll guru

i'd be lying if i said that the reason for me not writing is because i've been super busy.  while i do keep somewhat busy with church work, job hunting and my deviant geek addictions--i have pretty much committed myself to designing XYZ for the JO JAMEZ project.  if there is anyone reading this and has any resemblance of respect for music, check this kid out.  A blues rock power trio from Southern California with honest, whole-hearted content.  And the coolest thing of all...I live in his backyard.
the son of a preacher man (my pastor at free indeed), JO JAMEZ has got some serious soul!
i've been pouring through GIMP tutorials, design sites and whatnot for knowledge and inspiration.  it's quite honestly become more than an obsession.  i feel like this could be exactly what i was meant to do. i feel like this could be my career.
i'm to the point of almost needing to go to school--because i want to be on the front line of technology for learning design techniques.
dang it!

in the company of: apologetix

this was absolutely AMAZING.  three years in the making, the boys were finally able to jam in california.  the new twin guitar attack of tom tincha and tom milnes (dubbed affectionately as 'tnt') was completely phenomenal.  they really got the chance to show off their classic rock chops.  tincha's solo before "he really got mad" was insanely original yet hauntingly not unlike eddie van halen.  bill hubauer was missed but is currently on a project for his other band, ten till.  they've got some cool, creepy promo videos that are very reminiscent of m. night shyamalan's signs.  i don't know what it's all about yet, but if you have a facebook and become a fan, you get 2 free singles off of the upcoming 'project mayhem' cd.  i'll listen to them as soon as i get a free opportunity.

we got about 20 people from the church to attend the show.  that really made me feel like i was finally getting to share the experience that i've been raving about for years.  in case you didn't know, it ain't cool to be "in the know" about something if you are the only one that knows what the hell you're talking about!

cathy and i hung around for a good long while after the show and talked with the guys and touched base with them a bit.  our favorite facebook friend--eve tanner (jimmy's wife) gave us a really sweet chat.  i talked with j., tom milnes and jimmy 'vegas' tanner on our upcoming endeavor to host a radio web site for apologetix's music.  they are very receptive to the idea and i look forward to getting that done within the next year or so.

the night was polished off by an appearance of the actual de lorian used for the back to the future II movie.
the owner is a fan of the band and was a guest bass player for a song.  who can beat that for a bargaining chip?  "i'll buy you guys dinner and we can hang..."  "oh yeah?  i've got a freakin' de lorian.  i think i'll play in your band!!"  end of story.

to top it all off, cathy and i gobbled up the leftover pizza from the pizza kiln.  super gourmet pizza at almost discount prices.

in the history of my life--that was one of the best days i've ever had, short of getting married or going on vacation to santa barbara some years back.  even now, i can just lay back and breathe it all in and slowly let go--like one of your grandmother's whimsical fantastic sunday dinners that made the men unbutton their pants while watching the game afterward.  that's what i'm talkin' about.

i have let you down, wil wheaton!

i originally started this blog endeavor as a semi-tribute. i had the opportunity of reading wil wheaton's audiobook entitled just a geek. it was one of the best books i had read (i.e. listened to) in a long while. very well written--heartfelt, introspective, witty and most importantly...real. you see, everyone is fully aware that i do not personally know wil wheaton. and yet, nestled in my wi-fi poolhouse shack, in the wee hours of the morning, we are friends. as he spins tales of his youth and working in stand by me and star trek: the next generation, and later struggling as an actor and human being, i feel like i've known him forever.
in fact--as i'm writing this right now...i'm hearing his calm, gentle voice scrawl the words i type over this blog. isn't that just a little koo-koo?
i wrote that to say this: i really should not let this blogging thing die. if only for the wil wheaton that lives inside my head.

well for now...

[in the remotely impossible chance that you are wil wheaton and you are *ahem* reading this--i am not crazy, just a real fan who was profoundly touched by your book and career. p.s. what do think about joomla? ever think about making the switch?]

what the...

for the past couple of days, things had started to mellow out as far my insomnia issues are concerned.  cathy and i took some time and drove out to oceanside with our friend, pam.  the trip was actually to exchange some RAM at the geekstore, but when you bring friends it's always gonna wind up a decent time.  we even went to ruby's in carlsbad (happy hour milkshakes, y'all!!).  i ordered the chili size with endless fries and it was super good.  while i was wholly pleased with my chocolate malt (for only 3 frickin' dollars!), our friend pam had me sample her peanut butter cup milkshake--it was like a flavor bomb went off in my mouth.  i wouldn't cop to her having the best one, but here it is in writing.  pam's was WAY better. there.

that's all i got for now, maybe if i start thinking about it--i'll start making this blog endeavor multimedia with fanciful pictures from my ridiculously glamorous lifestyle.  uh yeah, right...

this is dedicated to the one i love...

today is my lovely lady's birthday! and as financially jammed as we are, we've managed to have a really cool birthday for her. her friends brought trinkets and foofoo stuff. she has definitely been shown that she is loved and cared for. thank you, lord for providing. well for now, we're going to gobble up gift cards.
